Darryl’s Corner is my go to for a delicious southern meal in a fun sit down location. Their food is usually very well seasoned and the portions are typically very filling. My favorite items to order on the menu are the Bob’s Catfish (fried) with collard greens and macaroni and cheese or the Fried Chicken & Waffle. A few days in the week there is live entertainment. I don’t usually order dessert at Darryl’s but decided to get the most popular Southern dessert I know- Sweet Potato Pie.
Sweet Potato Pie is very similar to Pumpkin Pie except that sweet potato is used as opposed to pumpkin. The tradition originated in the South and is a popular holiday dessert. Typically, sweet potatoes are boiled, mashed and mixed with butter, milk, eggs, sugar, vanilla and various spices such as cinnamon, ginger and/or nutmeg. Sometimes the recipe is spiked with bourbon or topped with marshmallows.
Here was Darryl’s version of the Southern staple:
Darryl’s Sweet Potato Pie was sprinkled with powdered sugar and accompanied with whipped cream and caramel drizzle. This pie was a total let down. The sweet potato filling was too mushy and was over powered by too much nutmeg and cinnamon. The filling to crust ratio was off as well; there was too much filling as opposed to crust. The crust was crisp, buttery and the best part of the pie. Although, I do recommend a visit to Darryl’s Corner for dinner and entertainment; the Sweet Potato Pie is a NAH.
