Vejigantes is a Puerto Rican restaurant in the South End. This was my second trip to the restaurant; I ordered the Bistec Encebollado (thin cut marinated steak with onions) for my entrée. Then I ordered algo dulce (something sweet) which was a dessert special featuring a sponge cake infused with rum and topped with coconuts. Here is what I received:
The presentation although very simple: whipped cream on top served in a cute shaped plate- made this “algo dulce” very enticing. Once I dug in, I began to sing a different story. This “something sweet” was far from sweet in fact it was very bland. I did not taste any rum and the coconuts were mostly on the bottom of the cake so they were hard to taste. The whipped cream seemed to be store-bought and it did not add any flavor element to the dessert at all. The cake was served cold but would have been a bit better if warm.
As much as I wanted to like this cake; I’d have to give it a NAH. It’s just not worth the calories.
